Private security was first introduced in the United States in the 1800s by Allan Pinkerton, who founded Pinkerton detective Agency which became famous for foiling the plot to assassinate then President-elect Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln became president, he hired Pinkerton Detectives as his personal security during the civil war. Many people believed that this action marked the beginning of our United States Government contracting private security companies to fill in our security gaps and that they kick-started the Secret Service.
Firstly, it is important to note that the United States Government takes the responsibility for providing Law Enforcement and Investigation Services throughout our Federal, State, county and city governments because they get taxpayer money for these services. It is also important to note that they cannot put a police officer on every corner, the dwindling ranks of police agencies cause the delays of response times to crimes and this dwindling number is caused by people not wanting to be a police officer in this day and age whereas, providing adequate policing requires at least 1 police officer per 1,000 residents. The sad reality is that most police departments have only the capacity to provide just 1 police officer per 5,000 to 7,0000 residents. This deficiency of police officers provides a security gap which is filled by private security firms because our local and state governments are unable to provide adequate protection and let us keep in mind this is not by their own design.
I must also acknowledge the cold hard truth that the majority of about 110,000 security officers employed by private security companies have little or in some state no training at all when they are hired and based on their security role, they may never obtain adequate basic training as a security officer depending on that particular company and where that officer’s post is.
In the private security industry over 100 million dollars is spent yearly on security and unlike Law Enforcement Agencies, security companies are not obliged nor forced to adequately train their security or have rules on who they should employ and who they should not employ and these decisions are completely dependent on the security firm.
In some unregulated States like Mississippi where I am located, you can be a convicted felon and own a security company or be a security officer with any felony conviction and work for one of these security firms. Is this what you ultimately want guarding your assets?
This makes it very important that you research the company you are looking to hire and also hire an outside firm to complete a criminal history of the officer’s assigned to your property. This will prevent you from not only looking like bobo the fool but keep you from hiring a person you are protecting your property from.
